The trend is to Go Green these days. With products and processes that are enviromentally friendly and safe. We have been kicking around the idea for sometime and we have been asked about this from customers. We would like your opinions. Here are the Pros and Cons as we see them for making a Belly Band that would be considered a “green” product.

Pros:

Environmentally friendly.

No need to buy absorbant pads to insert into the Belly Band.

The piece of mind knowing that you are not adding to the land fill problem

Cons:

Must buy several Belly Bands to get you through the day with your pet (more costly)

Washing out doggie urine in your households washing machine.

The extra costs associated with additional washings.

Dealing with the lingering effects of doggie urine odor in your home.

Not as easy to travel with Belly Bands that need to be washed out after each use.

The cost per Belly Band will be higher due to the addition of high-tech absorptive material that will need to be added to the product.

The hassle of changing into clean Belly Bands several times a day.

The time it takes to do additional washing throughout the week.

It seems to us that there are more Cons then Pros. But… that is our point of view. What are your thoughts on this? Please let us know. Thanks in advance for your input and response!

One thing to think about is that if it seems that your dog is having to urinate more then normal is that they just might be developing diabetes. Ya, imagine that. Just as we humans are seeing a dramatic increase in diabetes, so are our dogs. Mans best friend right? Canine Diabetes Mellitus is a disorder in dogs where their bodies are deficient in the production of insulin or insensitive to it. One of the earliest signs is that the dog will want to urinate more frequently and may even do so in the house. The color of the urine will be pail to almost clear. Owners of older dogs that develop diabetes often mistake these symptoms for incontinence when in fact it is due to the dog drinking excessively due to great thirst.

Weight loss despite increased appetite is also a very common symptom and one of the most noticeable. Diabetes Mellitus (sugar diabetes) is a progressive disease and the symptoms become more serious and debilitating. The animal becomes dehydrated and anorexic and may experience an increase in infections.

Every week we interact with owners who are desperate to find ways to deal with the symptoms of diabetes. This is one of the key reasons that we try to hard to keep the quality in our belly bands for males and britches for females. Watching our dogs go through a sickness is tough enough to do with out having to deal with the accidents that may happen because of the situation as well. At least we feel we can help a little with a difficult situation.

The definition of incontinence is the uncontrolled passing or leakage of urine. The cause of incontinence in dogs is most often found in neutered younger dogs or older dogs due to a decrease in hormones. It can also be a sign of prostate disease. Incontinence is often diagnosed in female dogs, however, males can develop this symptom due to infection, blockages, stress, drinking too much water, a weak bladder or spinal cord disease.
It is good to know that there are ways to help with the dog’s discomfort and the owner’s displeasure. Also, it is important to realize that some dogs may have incontinence regardless of what steps are taken to fix the problem. Taking the animal for walks helps to eliminate urine buildup in the bladder. Paying careful attention to the dog’s sleeping area will make cleanups easier and the animal more comfortable. Things that can be done are having a water-tight bed, a clean mat or waterproof bed pad where your dogs sleeps.
There is also the option of diapers for dogs. There are many products on the market with numerous styles, types, and designs. Kennel Komforts has 15 years experience providing this type of product for either your female or your male dog to help with incontinence. Having a Belly Band or a Bitch Britch from Kennel Komforts can be a life saver when traveling, visiting someone else’s home, or protecting your own home.
